From mariasilvia.giamberini at igg.cnr.it Mon Jul 17 13:20:24 2017 From: mariasilvia.giamberini at igg.cnr.it (Silvia Giamberini) Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2017 13:20:24 +0200 Subject: [Protected-areas@ecopotential.cnr.it] *****ECOPOTENTIAL photo exhibition******IMPORTANT!!!!!!******** Message-ID: <4B902587-352A-4DDC-B995-BF232817D627@igg.cnr.it> Dear Partners This is a very important message regarding the ECOPOTENTIAL photo exhibition. Please read it carefully and respond accordingly, thank you!!! Here are the latest news and update of the photo exhibit: The ECOPOTENTIAL photo exhibition will take place in Bruxelles, at the ?European Parliament, from January 8th to January 12th 2018, and will possibly travel? ?afterwards. It is likely that we will manage to have a few selected panels of the ?exhibition at the GEO Plenary meeting in Washington DC, USA, in October 2017. Overall, this exhibition is receiving a lot of attention from the European Parliament and the EC, so we better we set it up in the most interesting and appealing way... Recently we also had an important feedback from EC officers, who ?rightly stressed the importance of having clear messages on the use of our results (and of? ?Remote Sensing and Earth Observations in general) for ecosystem and protected area? ?management and conservation and, in general, for the benefit of society. Thus, in the exhibit we shall: (a) show the case for the use of remote sensing data in ecosystem research, (b) stress the importance of protected areas as producers of? ?benefits for citizens and society, and (c) use ?a simple language that any citizen can properly understand and be convinced of the relevance of our research and of the fact that society puts? resources into remote sensing and research activities. For making the long story short, adopting suggestions from a previous ?work done by UNESCO and GRIDA on mountain ecosystems, we decided to re-shape the panels for the picture exhibition to a format which explains the scientific work behind and illustrates both the Protected Areas and, where possible, the Storylines. The main idea is to use the pictures and satellite images to ?tell a? ?story? about one major ecological theme of the ECOPOTENTIAL? Protected Areas, possibly? linked with the corresponding storyline. It will be a hard work, but the results are encouraging as we see that? ?with this format we can communicate the importance of conservation and the importance? of scientific research in Protected Areas, which is the main goal of this exhibit. We already checked the feasibility of this format with a few ?pilot? ?testers? in the last month. ******Practically, we propose to proceed in this way:******* There will be ONE? panel for each PA, displaying pictures and? ?satellite images related to a main theme, possibly from the storyline, plus a shot text / captions,? ?plus a couple of general panels about the Project as a whole (so, a total of 25 to 30 panels) In the attachment, you can see a try-out that we prepared using Kruger? ?as tester. Although this panel is not fully finalized finished yet, we think that? ?it? is ?self-explaining? about what we would like to achieve. MAIN STEPS IN THE NEXT WEEKS/MONTHS: For each protected area, we need to: -?? Choose a theme (from the storyline or from an ecological feature? that we want to highlight) -?? Collect, choose and select with us related pictures? and satellite? (RS) images -?? Revise with us a short text for the PA and the Storylines. We are? starting to extract sometext from the already existing descriptions that you prepared, but we? need close interaction with you. -?? be available for a few iterations for preparing the final version As for RS images, the WP4 leader CREAF will support, plus possibly? other external sources. As for text, in the exhibit panels we have space only for a short? text, but in the accompanying volume that we will print - to be ready by January at latest - we? should? accompany each panelwith a page of simple text explaining better what are the benefits for? society of what we are doing. DEADLINES AND WORKFLOW: We posed the deadline for pictures collection at the end of August. We ask you to respect this deadline, but we are available to set a? different calendar on a case-by-case? basis if needed (e.g. need to obtain targeted pictures). HOW TO PROCEED NOW: We are available for a Gotomeeting session where we will be available? for discussing our proposal in details and will be available for answering questions. Please go to this link and fill this doodle - ?it would be good to have groups of 5-8 partners per each virtual meeting, so we can have a detailed discussion. https://doodle.com/poll/qgbddheqsfxa4696 WORKING TEAM Coordination: Antonello, Matthias, Carl, Silvia For the panel preparation: Pictures collection: PLEASE SEND THE PICTURES USING DROPBOX OR WETRANSFER TO: Silvia Giamberini: Giamberini at igg.cnr.it Bjorn Alfthan: Bjorn.Alfthan at grida.no Tina Schoolmeester:?
