From elixir-ita_ml.elixir-ita.cnr.it a srv00.area.ba.cnr.it Wed Mar 3 14:01:42 2021 From: elixir-ita_ml.elixir-ita.cnr.it a srv00.area.ba.cnr.it (General ELIXIR-Italy Mailing list) Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2021 14:01:42 +0100 Subject: [ELIXIR-ITA_ml] Postdoctoral position in bioinformatics at ULB Bruxelles Message-ID: The Computational Biology and Bioinformatics group of the Brussels University (ULB) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position. *Research context*: The understanding of the biophysical mechanisms that drive single nucleobase substitutions in different regions of the human genome is one of the key questions of the post-genomic era. These mutations, whether inherited or somatic, are potentially responsible for a huge range of rare and complex diseases. The rationalization of these mechanisms is highly intricate, since base substitutions depend on the nucleotide sequence context and can be triggered by a wide range of physical, chemical or biological factors. *Objective*: In the AtOme project, we will bridge the gap between the atomic-level characterization of mutagenesis processes and the resulting phenotypic traits. More specifically, we will investigate the role of DNA charge transport in mutational and pathogenic processes using a multiscale computational approach combining quantum chemistry, machine learning and genomics. *Offer*: A full time postdoctoral position for 2 years. Flexible starting date, between now and October 2021. Possibility of extension through an FNRS postdoctoral research grant or a Marie Curie EC grant. *Required:* - PhD degree in Sciences (Bioinformatics, Bioengineer, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics). - Excellent programming skills. - Excellent publication record. - Maximum 6 years research experience after PhD. - International mobility (maximum 24 months of residence in Belgium in the last 3 years). *Desirable:* - Experience in the area of quantum chemistry, machine learning, and/or genome bioinformatics. *Contact*: Please submit: (1) a cover letter detailing your background and interest in the position, (2) a full CV and (3) two references (with name, email, address, phone number), to M. Rooman (mrooman a ulb.ac.be). *Application deadline: *June 1, 2021 -------------- parte successiva -------------- Un allegato HTML è stato rimosso... Call for Participation Lake Como Workshop and School on Cancer Development and Complexity 2021 ======================================================================= May 24 - May 28, 2021 Villa del Grumello - via per Cernobbio, 11 - 22100 Como, ITALY website: http://cdac2021.lakecomoschool.org/ -------------------------------------------------------------- Cancer is a complex disease involving several intertwined phenomena and events, which collude to unleash the tumor cells inherent programs to proliferate, live, and move; thus, it is the malfunction of the biomolecular machinery responsible for the "checks and balances", normally governed by various complex feedback loops among a population of various cell types. Breakdown of this machinery leads to uncontrolled growth of a cell population being selected by evolutionary pressure that ultimately costs the very survival of the host. Understanding the many intricacies of all these interactions at the subcellular, cellular and tissue levels has greatly benefitted from the ever-improving applications of algorithmic, statistical and mathematical modeling tools. Moreover, during the past 15 years, new measurement technology for gene expression and, more recently, "deep" genome sequence data, have produced vast amount of data, waiting to be analyzed to deliver new interpretations. The design of novel "wet" experiments and appropriately matched algorithmic, statistical and mathematical modeling tools are expected to become the key to successful oncological science and practice. The Workshop and School on Cancer Development and Complexity seeks to convene researchers from various related disciplines to explore multiple facets of the challenges posed by cancer a "disease of the systems." The workshop will provide opportunities for the researchers to exchange new ideas and viewpoints, forge new collaborations and train the next generation of young scientists. Participants are encouraged to present their work in two sessions and poster presentations that will be held during the workshop. The program will provide an introduction to both cancer biology and mathematical and statistical methods used in analyzing the datasets currently being produced by several laboratories around the world. Next the program will provide an opportunity to interact with world renowned cancer and bioinformatics researchers and the chance for attendees to present their current work. Finally, all the attendees will receive a certificate of completion of the School. *** Speakers (confirmed) * Charles Cantor, U Boston, USA * Giulio Caravagna, U Trieste, IT * Chiara Damiani, U Milan-Bicocca, IT * Trevor Graham, QMUL, UK * Marnix Jansen, UCL, UK * Bud Mishra, NYU, USA * Antonina Mitrofanova, Rutgers U, USA * Maria Rodriguez Marinez, IBM Research, Zurich, CH * Mònica Sánchez Guixé, IRB, ES * Hans Westerhoff, U and VU Amsterdam, NL, and U Manchester, UK *** School Directors * Marco Antoniotti, DCBLab, Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca, Milan, Italy. * Riccardo Bellazzi, Università degli Studi di Pavia, Pavia, Italy. * Alex Graudenzi, INLAB, IBFM-CNR, Milan, Italy. * Bud Mishra, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Tandon School of Engineering, NYU, New York, NY, USA. *** Local Organization * Fabrizio Angaroni (DCBLab) * Gianluca Ascolani (DCBLab) * Francesco Craighero (DCBLab) * Davide Maspero (DCBLab and CNR) * Lucrezia Patruno (DCBLab) * Francesco Santoro (DCBLab) *** Steering Committee * Marco Antoniotti, DCBLab, Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca, Milan, Italy. * Charles Cantor, Agena Biosciences, Sequenom, Retrotope and Boston University, USA. * Alex Graudenzi, Innovation & Integration in Molecular Medicine Laboratory (INLAB), Institute of Molecular Bioimaging and Physiology of the Italian National Research Council (IBFM-CNR), Italy. * Bud Mishra, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Tandon School of Engineering, NYU, New York, NY, USA. * Giulio Pavesi, Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan, Italy. * Giovanni Porta, Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, Varese, Italy. *** Institutions * DCBLab, Dipartimento di Informatica, Sistemistica e Comunicazione, Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca, Milan, Italy (http://bimib.disco.unimib.it) * Fondazione "Alessandro Volta", Como, Italy (http://fondazionealessandrovolta.it) * Lake Como School of Advanced Studies, Como, Italy (http://lakecomoschool.org) *** Venue Villa del Grumello (http://www.villadelgrumello.it) *** Registration The directors decided, given the state of current vaccination campaigns to hold a hybrid event, with an in-person meeting in Como, and a virtual streaming event for global viewers.
